The Legal Department of the ACLU of New Hampshire seeks a legal intern for a full-time (35 hours/week) or part-time (15-20 hours/week) Fall 2024 legal internship. The internship will principally focus on immigration law and will last a minimum of 10 weeks
Job Description
The legal intern will be exposed to, and participate in, the process of developing and pursuing immigration cases (including before agencies, the district court, and the court of appeals). The primary focus of the internship will be immigration (85-90%). The legal intern could be asked to work 10-15% of their time on non-immigration work, such as voting rights, government accountability, and racial justice.
The legal intern’s duties will include:
- Conducting legal research for current and potential cases and non-litigation advocacy projects;
- Drafting memoranda, affidavits, and briefs;
- Interviewing potential and current clients;
- Investigating the facts of specific cases; and
- Other duties as needed.
Senior Staff Attorney SangYeob Kim will be the primary supervisor for the internship.
Financial Support
This internship is paid regardless of whether the legal intern is receiving academic credits or not. Please note in your cover letter whether an independent funding source is available to you. The lack of academic credit or independent funding will not count against your application in any way.
Qualifications
- Law student who will have completed at least one year of law school before the internship commences.
- Self-motivated and can take the initiative, manage a variety of tasks, and see projects through to completion in a fast-paced and collaborative environment.
- Receptive to feedback, enthusiastic about learning and self-improvement, and eager to incorporate feedback into future work.
- Excellent foundation in legal research, including the judgment to discern what cases are relevant to a particular research question and thoroughness in covering the question asked.
- Excellent legal writing skills, including the ability to present ideas in a clear and organized manner and to write a memo that addresses what you have learned through research.
- Commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion within the office, using an approach that values all individuals and respect differences.
