WHO WE ARE
The American Civil Liberties Union of New Hampshire (ACLU-NH) was founded in 1968 by a small group of devoted civil libertarians and is one of 53 affiliates of the ACLU nationwide. Today the national ACLU is comprised of more than 1,500,000 members. The ACLU-NH is a nonprofit, nonpartisan membership organization dedicated to preserving the individual rights and liberties guaranteed in the Bill of Rights and the Constitution. Since its founding, the ACLU-NH has been at the forefront of many major efforts to protect civil liberties, civil rights, and equal justice in the Granite State. The ACLU-NH tackles a vast array of issues, including criminal justice, police practices, First Amendment rights, voting rights, gender equity and reproductive justice, LGBTQ+ rights, immigrants’ rights, and economic justice.
The ACLU-NH staff of 16 works in a fast-paced, friendly, and professional office environment.
OVERVIEW
The ACLU-NH welcomes applicants to pursue legal fellowships, including Skadden, Equal Justice Works, school-based, and other fellowships for one-year or two-year terms. Once the ACLU-NH selects its candidates, the organization will work with the candidates to craft a fellowship proposal and submit a joint application to the sponsoring school or organization.
The ACLU-NH will be pursuing fellowships to address some, or all, of the following areas:
- Ending police practices that lead to racial discrimination, including ending the use pretextual police stops
- Alternatives to policing, with a focus on (i) responding to mental health crises and (ii) racial and economic justice in traffic enforcement
- Ending qualified immunity
- Immigrants’ rights
APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS
Candidates are strongly encouraged to highlight their experience, skills, and demonstrated commitment and enthusiasm to work at the ACLU-NH in any of the identified issue areas. Candidates are also welcome, but not required, to include their own ideas for focusing their fellowship projects in any of the identified issue areas in their application. Compelling projects build on the ACLU-NH’s and the applicant’s experience and skills, and generally combine impact litigation and/or policy advocacy with community partnerships through activities such as coalition-building, outreach, public education, and/or technical assistance to community organizations.
Timing
Applicants interested in applying for fellowships must submit an application to the ACLU-NH 60 days before any application is due to an external funder.
