This year's proposed state budget, soon headed to Governor Sununu's desk, contains two deeply problematic civil rights concerns. They stem from House Bill 625 and House Bill 544 -- read more about them below!

One is an extreme abortion ban that originates from House Bill 625, which contains no exceptions for rape, incest, or fetal health, and would criminalize doctors with felonies and 7.5 years in prison. The language would ban abortion after 24 weeks, meaning families would be forced to carry to term and give birth to a fetus that will not live. Tests at or after 24 weeks can show a devastating diagnosis, and families deserve access to critical, compassionate care in those situations.

Next is the "divisive concepts" language, originating from House Bill 544, which would censor schools, universities, and state workplaces from learning about discrimination and systemic racism, including critical implicit bias training taken by law enforcement. The Governor recently said that this would strengthen our state's anti-discrimination laws, but the opposite is true: it would drastically minimize the discrimination people of color and other marginalized communities face in our state.
